Persepolis was an ancient ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, the very same Empire that Xerxes ruled over and fought the Persian wars. This magnificent palace was burnt down and looted by Alexander the great in 333 BC during his invasion of Persia. Today, the ruins of Persepolise remain one of the world's major archaeological sites.
